My journey into miniatures
Hello, I am Sofie.
As a child growing up in the 1980s—when technology had not yet taken such a firm hold on our lives and playing was still the pastime of choice—my main activities were gymnastics, drawing, painting, sculpting with clay, reading, and playing with my dollhouse (more about that in my very first blog post). During my teenage years, the dollhouse gradually faded into the background, but I continued to spend countless hours after school drawing and writing poetry. My homework was always kept within easy reach so I could quickly place it on top of whatever creative project I was working on whenever my mother walked into my room.
It was only after I had children of my own, when the combination of family life and work consumed most of my time, that I realized how much I NEED to be creative. During several consecutive jobs in education, I was happiest when I was asked to develop a new teaching method, write a play, or paint a banner for a school event—tasks that made up only a small portion of my working hours. I came to understand that a career change was necessary and retrained as an interior designer. A much better fit, although still rather stressful at times.
A few years ago, I decided to take out the dollhouse miniatures from my childhood that I had carefully kept all those years. More recently, I discovered the art of making miniatures myself. To me, this feels like the greatest gift I could ever receive. It brings together all my interests: history, interior design, drawing, painting, and countless crafting techniques. There is so much to learn, so much to discover, and—best of all—I get to create my own little ideal worlds and leave reality behind for a while. And I can do so at my own pace, free from the pressure of deadlines. For me, this is the ultimate form of relaxation.
Through this blog, I hope to inspire you and offer you a moment of relaxation as well. Enjoy reading and exploring!
