Huyze Herkert, morning room: drawings for the wall

As I mentioned in my previous post, letting go of the parrot wallpaper wasn't easy. I really loved those parrots! So I started wondering whether there might be a way to bring them back into the room after all. Perhaps still as part of the wall décor?

I found illustrations from A Monograph of the Lories, published in London in 1896. In the original artwork, the parrots are predominantly reddish, but to make them fit the colour scheme of my morning room, I decided to redraw them in shades of deep pink, purple, and blue. The drawings were done using coloured pencils.








Once they were finished, I sealed them with a fixative spray. I then cut sheets of PVC to size and framed them.


The plan is to hang the two framed drawings on either side of the baby dollhouse. (I first intended to hang them side by side above the desk. But I decided a large painting is a more suitable choice for that spot.)

Well, as I said in my previous post, I jumped right in after I decided to make a dollhouse for the dollhouse. I found that I enjoyed working at this scale much more than I had anticipated. So I was really disappointed that the showpiece was finished so quickly. Besides, there's no kitchen, no dining room, no bath, no ... So many possibilities I'd missed. So many little things I could have made from scratch. What to do? After thinking about it for a while I decided that an extension was necessary. There was only one option: build it on top of the existing cabinet. I remember seeing some house shaped cabinets in my book ‘Victorian & Edwardian furniture & interiors’ by Jeremy Cooper. Like this ‘Architecture Cabinet’ (1858) by William Burges. And this writing cabinet by W. Gualbert Saunders. Huyze Herkert, morning room: a dollhouse for in the dollhouse

The first piece of furniture I started with for this room, illustrates my point I made at the end of my second blogpost: it wasn’t planned to be in this room (not such a clear vision after all) . I also didn't stick to my intention to make as much as possible from scratch. It is a generic piece with wide availability. Not a good start… Well, in my defense: I found the cabinet in a grab box at a fair for a very low price and I liked the color and the shape. It was last year, at the very beginning of my dollhouse journey and I couldn’t resist, although I didn’t have a destination for it. Until I found some more pieces I couldn’t resist, at another fair: tiny 1:144 scale furniture. I realized that the shape of the cabinet was very similar to the well-known Dutch dollhouses from the 17th century (the ones from Petronella Oortman, Petronella Dunois and Petronella de la Court - that I was fortunate enough to see all three in person this January! ). An introduction to Huyze Herkert

I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but when I was fairly young (around 7 maybe?), my parents bought me a dollhouse. A dark stained, massive wooden one. A sturdy one. One with two floors. One that they didn't think was big enough, because they asked my grandfather's brother to add an extra floor at the bottom. The house was filled with furniture, accessories and crockery that came from my grandmother's old dollhouse. And with new bits and pieces of course. My grandparents traveled extensively, and they often brought back items from their travels for the dollhouse. Not all the furniture was the same scale. And the house was inhabited by a mix of Sylvanian Families animals and dolls. After all it was an item to play with. A big Playmobil house followed, and some smaller Sylvanian Families ones.
