Huyze Herkert, morning room: drawings for the wall

As I mentioned in my previous post, letting go of the parrot wallpaper wasn't easy. I really loved those parrots! So I started wondering whether there might be a way to bring them back into the room after all. Perhaps still as part of the wall décor?

I found illustrations from A Monograph of the Lories, published in London in 1896. In the original artwork, the parrots are predominantly reddish, but to make them fit the colour scheme of my morning room, I decided to redraw them in shades of deep pink, purple, and blue. The drawings were done using coloured pencils.








Once they were finished, I sealed them with a fixative spray. I then cut sheets of PVC to size and framed them.


The plan is to hang the two framed drawings on either side of the baby dollhouse. (I first intended to hang them side by side above the desk. But I decided a large painting is a more suitable choice for that spot.)

    Hello Sofie! I Love your parrot renderings! They are very very well done, especially for such small works. And in colored pencils! (They are tricky as they each have such a specific pigment and it never seems to be the one desired... at least in my humble opinion... I am no good at pencils) You have captured much of the liveliness and character of the birds. I really look forward to seeing them in their places in the Morning Room. I suppose I must forgive you for abandoning the parrot wall paper after all. :)

      Hello Betsy! I've always loved drawing (very often using nothing but a graphite pencil). I've been using the same coloured pencils from Bruynzeel and Caran d'Ache for as long as I can remember, so I have a pretty good sense of how much pressure to apply and which shade to use to achieve the effect I'm after. But I completely understand what you mean. On the rare occasions when I try drawing with a different brand of pencils, I spend so much time figuring them out that I always end up going back to the brands I know so well.
      I also love painting, but I find that much more challenging. Mixing paint colours is an art in itself. Yet you make it look so effortless!

Well, as I said in my previous post, I jumped right in after I decided to make a dollhouse for the dollhouse. I found that I enjoyed working at this scale much more than I had anticipated. So I was really disappointed that the showpiece was finished so quickly. Besides, there's no kitchen, no dining room, no bath, no ... So many possibilities I'd missed. So many little things I could have made from scratch. What to do? After thinking about it for a while I decided that an extension was necessary. There was only one option: build it on top of the existing cabinet. I remember seeing some house shaped cabinets in my book ‘Victorian & Edwardian furniture & interiors’ by Jeremy Cooper. Like this ‘Architecture Cabinet’ (1858) by William Burges. And this writing cabinet by W. Gualbert Saunders. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but when I was fairly young (around 7 maybe?), my parents bought me a dollhouse. A dark stained, massive wooden one. A sturdy one. One with two floors. One that they didn't think was big enough, because they asked my grandfather's brother to add an extra floor at the bottom. The house was filled with furniture, accessories and crockery that came from my grandmother's old dollhouse. And with new bits and pieces of course. My grandparents traveled extensively, and they often brought back items from their travels for the dollhouse. Not all the furniture was the same scale. And the house was inhabited by a mix of Sylvanian Families animals and dolls. After all it was an item to play with. A big Playmobil house followed, and some smaller Sylvanian Families ones. On a sidetrack: natural history museum roombox - part 1

 At the end of May, the son of a very dear friend celebrated his ‘groeifeest’ (literally translated as ‘growth celebration’) . This is a typically Belgian phenomenon. It is a secular confirmation ceremony, organized for children who do not participate in a religious confirmation. Both celebrations take place at the end of primary school, in the year the child turns twelve. It was quickly decided that the gift for the guest of honor would have a miniature theme, since he has a soft spot for anything small and cute. Finding the right subject, however, proved more difficult. That changed when I bought a copy of Dollhouse Nederland and came across a 1:12 scale natural history museum featured in the magazine. Perfect for a twelve-year-old boy. Inspiration struck! Because I had only seven weeks to create the entire museum, I had no choice but to keep its dimensions modest.
